Outdoor First Aid

Climbing, walking, mountain biking and general play in the outdoors can have different challenges when it comes to delivering first aid in the outdoor environment.  For any leader, first aid is an essential skill and being prepared should an incident occur is vital. ABC-Resus Training provide an excellent Outdoors First Aid course to meet the needs of relevant assessments (CWA/SPA/ML).

Creating an area of safety is the first challenge to the first aider. Physical dangers such as rock fall as well as environmental difficulties can soon create what first appeared to be a simple injury into something much more complex.  Only when an area is safe can you begin to carry out a thorough ABCDE Initial assessment of the casualty.

ABC-Resus Training provide both 8 hour and 16 hour courses to meet the needs of climbing and walking group leaders. Understanding mechanisms of injury is fundamental to Outdoor First Aid which is why an emphasis is placed on practical learning and assessment of injury.

Both courses require practical participation and enthusiasm; with essential theory taught and lectures kept to a minimum.   Where appropriate the courses are taught outdoors, and emphasise the practical challenges in providing first aid in outdoor environments.

The minimum requirement to meet the SPA must involve at least two full days or sixteen hours of instruction and assessment. It is the responsibility of award holders and/or their employers to evaluate their likely work and the type of situations that they can reasonably expect to encounter and to maintain current appropriate first aid training and qualifications.
